I have decided to create a second article explaining the add ons to the Kardashev Scale. These add ons that I am referring to are the types 4, 5, and 6 on the scale. I also wanted to give credit to astronomer Carl Sagan. He was a big contributor to the development of the Kardashev scale as he devised an equation to determine a civilization’s rating based on watt output. He calculated humanity’s rating at a 0.7 using this equation:

In the formula, K equals the Kardashev rating and P is the amount of power used by the civilization in watts. Advanced mathematics is required to use this equation but it is a very useful tool for astrophysicists looking to find the hypothetical power output of a civilization.

After the explanation of types 1, 2, and 3, I will now explain the newly added types of 4, 5, and 6. Kardashev believed anything passed a type 3 was impossible and there have been no calculations for power output of these civilizations. It was just assumed that 4, 5, and 6 would have infinite amounts of power and you will understand why.

A type 4 civilization would have the power of their entire universe. In an ever expanding universe filled with so much possibility, this civilization would have an infinite amount of energy at their disposal. This civilization could reverse space-time, mess with the fabric of reality and the laws of natural physics. The entire universe is their playground. If you are a Star Trek fan, this is a Q level of civilization. Because of the amount of power of this civilization, who knows if it’s even possible to reach it.

If a type 4 civilization seems impossible , type 5 is an unimaginable level of civilization. A type 5 civilization would theoretically control not just one universe, but many, many universes. The laws of physics are just possibly non-existent for this civilization. They would be omnipotent and probably beyond comprehension. Not even the Q are this powerful. The only species I can think of for this scale are the Beyonders from the Marvel comics universe.

Finally the type 6 civilization, also known as the omega civilization. It is so powerful, the only way to describe it is just God-like. These beings exist outside of universes, create universes, and can easily destroy a universe just as easily as create one. This level would be impossible for a civilization to reach. Type 4 and 5 are considered impossible; this level is definitely impossible for a species to achieve.
